The deer in the petting area are currently having babies this month. It is alright to go into the petting area with the babies. However, the staff is asking visitors to only look at the babies from a distance and not attempt to pet them. They are very young and fragile and we do not want stress them.

Sierra Safari Zoo lost a key family member on January 22, 2011. One of our founders, Dale McDaniel, passed away suddenly in his sleep that Saturday morning at the age of 53. To commemorate his memory we will be holding a memorial at the zoo on Saturday June 18, 2011. Admission to the zoo will be free on this day.
Dale touched many lives in both the exotic animal field as well as with teaching children. He found a flawless way of incorporating animals into the education of the children he taught for nearly 16 years, and his love of animals and children was apparent in his everyday life.
Dale would regularly bring in animals from the zoo to his classroom (he taught in Carson County) to help teach leadership skills, discipline, self-esteem and compassion for living things to children with special needs.
His knowledge of animals was also shared through the zoo with guests and volunteers alike. Dale, along with Jimmie Martin and Dave Dawson, began the zoo in 1989 with the largest birds in the world, ostriches, and slowly built up their collection into the zoo everyone knows and loves today.
Come join many volunteers, friends, and family on June 18th to help us remember the life of an amazing individual, Dale McDaniel.

Welcome our newest residents. The zoo is now featuring a male and female spotted (laughing) hyenas. The hyena is Africa's most common large carnivore. It is very difficult to determine the sex of hyenas, we challenge you to spot which is the male and which is the female. Join use in welcoming our new residents.

Another baby is born. Our female vervet monkey just had a baby. Mom and baby are doing great. Come on in and see the new baby. Mom is very nervous now that she has a newborn and will not stay outside for the visitors to see if they are loud. However, if you stay quite she may come outside and show off her newborn babe. So come on in and see the newborn before we close our doors for the winter (the 31st of October).

Bridget had a baby. Bridget our Olive baboon was given birth. Mom and baby are doing great. The new baby is on mom and is growing rapidly. Bridget and the newborn are still with the the rest of their troop. All the baboons take part in the care of the newborn. We ask when viewing the newborn that guests be quite and respectful. Bridger may go into her indoor inclosure and not be viewable if she feels her baby is in danger.
Come in and see the pair today! Track the baby as it grows!

Welcome our newest resident Kalika. Kalika is female liger, which came to the zoo when she was 9 months. A liger is a lion tiger hybrid, meaning the mother was a tiger and the
father is a lion. Ligers are usually grow larger than both their parents. Also, if you look closely, you can see that the fur patterns match that of both species. Lion coloring
and spots on the head with tiger strips down the body and legs. So when you come visit us look closer at Kalika. Kalika is still a cub and is very energetic and playful. She loves
to play with the staff, jump and play in water.

Meet Jasper! Jasper is a ring-tail lemur from Madagascar. They are the only ground lemurs. Jasper was born here at the zoo on 06/17/2009. His parents can be found on monkey row.
Jasper is a animal ambassador in training. Ring-tail lemurs status is endangered, it is essential we educate the public that in the very near future animals like him may
no longer be found in the wild and only found in books. Jasper is helping in representing his species to the goal of preservation and conservation. So our childrens' children may
have the opportunity to see these magnificent animals.
